Corish Motorsport’s Mason Harvey has secured a thrilling finale to Round 2 for the Battery World Aussie Racing Cars presented by TFH Hire at Symmons Plains.
Harvey took a stunning victory by 0.047s after gaining a draft onto the start-finish straight to pip MTA NSW’s Kody Garland to the line.
It was equally close behind as Reece Chapman completed a superb Sunday fightback to bring the Motorsport25/Racer Industries Mustang onto the final step of the podium by 0.044s from Riskie Racing’s Brandon Madden and the Osborn’s Transport entry of dual series winner Joel Heinrich.
Garland led for the entirety of the race bar the final 100m after putting in a masterful defensive drive from initially Madden, then Harvey during the latter stages.
Positional changes were constant behind Garland as Madden held second ahead of Harvey at the start, with Heinrich and Race 1 winner Scott Andriske not far behind.
Chapman needed to pick off Johnston Craill Racing Enterprises driver Jack Boyd and lead Rookie Cup runner Caleb Paterson for Norganic Proteins Australia before starting his pursuit of Andriske in fifth.
The gap between the top three and Heinrich fluctuated, with Andriske coming along for the ride before a mechanical problem halted his race after making the move to fourth.
A pivotal moment of the race came when Harvey finally took second from Madden, which opened the door for the chasing trio led by Heinrich to close in.
But this was only for a moment as Garland and Harvey gapped Heinrich heading into the closing stages as Madden, plus Chapman made things uncomfortable for the three-time series winner.
The second half of the final lap proved crucial to Harvey’s challenge and a great exit out of Turn 6 set-up a last gasp win from Garland, Chapman, Madden and Heinrich.
Paterson maintained sixth to win the Rookie Cup from Boyd, Gold Cup victor Scott Dornan after he climbed 12 positions in the Action Line Marking Camaro and Klark Quinn took Masters Cup in ninth for Norganic Proteins Australia.
Andrew Corish fought off Riskie Racing’s Joseph Andriske and the Reynovate Constructions entry of Ryan Reynolds for the final position inside the top 10.
Masters Cup contender Cody Mckay’s challenge hit the skids after Kyle Lovering tapped him into a spin.
Mckay still finished runner up to Quinn in Masters Cup as Shane Mann fended off Troy Jones for third.
Behind Paterson, Lovering still held on to second despite the contact with Mckay as category debutant Kim Andersen rounded out the top three.
Gold Cup victory was just reward for Dornan after his rapid progress to head Andriske and David Makin, who made contact with the armco on his way to third in class.
The Battery World Aussie Racing Cars presented by TFH Hire continues for Round 3 at Carco.com.au Raceway in Perth on June 6-8.
