Kody Garland charges through to take Race 3 at Symmons Plains

A textbook charge from MTA NSW’s Kody Garland has secured victory in an eventful third race for the Battery World Aussie Racing Cars Series presented by TFH Hire at Symmons Plains.

Featuring an inverted top 12 grid, Garland rose to fourth on the opening lap to set up the victory from yesterday’s Race 2 winner Mason Harvey for Corish Motorsports and Joel Heinrich in the Osborn’s Transport entry.

Andrew Corish and Caleb Paterson shared the front row as the latter won the start, while Heinrich from further back took to the grass on the inside to emerge third.

Cold conditions provided a struggle for some drivers as the lack of grip led to some interesting moments.

Paterson held the lead for a lap until Heinrich made a pass at Turn 6, with Garland following through at the hairpin to mount a challenge on his title rival. This proved successful when Garland made a successful pass at Turn 6 and snatch the lead, while Paterson had not gone away as he pressured Heinrich.

The race was neutralised when Race 1 winner Scott Andriske ran wide approaching the hairpin and the TFH Racing Mustang found the gravel trap.

It proved a short interruption, with Garland continuing to hold the lead in the restart as Harvey began to enter calculations in fourth.

A mistake from Riskie Racing’s Brandon Madden at the hairpin allowed Harvey to take third, before he successfully moved through on Heinrich at Turn 6.

Garland was dominating up front and enjoyed a 1.4s margin, which was cut to 0.7s by the end of the event thanks a late surge by Harvey.

Heinrich held on to third from Madden, Rookie Cup winner Paterson and Reece Chapman after a superb charge through the field in the Motorsport25/Racer Industries entry following an engine failure in Race 2.

Front-row starter Corish was seventh from Johnston Craill Racing Enterprises driver Jack Boyd, Master Cup winner Cody Mckay and leader in Gold Cup Joseph Andriske completed the top 10.

Kyle Lovering made steady progress to finish runner up in Rookie Cup to Paterson, with Kim Andersen rounding out the class podium.

A mechanical problem for Kent Quinn in the Norganic Proteins Australia entry dropped him out of the lead allowing Mckay to score the class win from Shane Mann and Troy Jones.

Andriske added a second Gold Cup win from David Makin and Jeff Watters.

Also, credit to the teams for repairing the entries of Watters and Denis Butler overnight after the incident in Race 2, with many competitors chipping in to help.

It’s a short turnaround until the final Battery World Aussie Racing Cars Series presented by TFH Hire event at Symmons Plains, which is due to begin at 10:25am AEST live on Kayo and Fox Sports 506.
