The Battery World Aussie Racing Cars Super Series played host to one of the great wedding proposals in recent times.
Newcastle local Cody McKay proposed to partner Aly in quite an unconventional way.
While keeping Aly away from his pit, McKay and his crew placed a sticker on the door with the proposal as when he rolled out for Race 1the television cameras zoomed in to reveal the question.
Of course, shock and elation ensued!
“I’ve been planning this for way to long and Aly’s probably been bugging me for a while, so we thought at our home race was the best time to really go all out to have the most expensive proposal ever that has ever happened in history,” McKay explained.
“I’d hate to think of the racing costs that go in with it.
“We had to try our best to hide Aly away and she didn’t realise until I was out on pit straight, so for the last two hours I’ve had sponsors that have jumped on this weekend to distract here, family and friends have helped.
“We had to hide her over in the main pits as we had to sticker the car in quick time and we finished with five minutes to go before we gridded up, so she saw it on the first time on the big screen.”
Aly thought her job was to look after the sponsors for the weekend, however this changed once she saw the big screen prior to Race 1.
“I thought my job today was to keep track of his sponsor, so I went to gate to pick up Dean Singleton and his family,” Aly said.
“I didn’t know it was Dean distracting me, not the other way around!
“I was walking Dean down to the pits trying to kill time before Cody’s race and I finally got to the lane where I noticed the camera was focused right on us.
“I was speaking to Dean telling him ‘this is good TV time pointing on the car with his logo’ and then he was like ‘who’s that new sponsor on the side of the car?’ I drew a little closer and I saw ‘will you marry me Aly?’ I then lost it!
“Obviously the answer was yes, but I was just shaking because I was just so surprised and it is insane!”
It is not sure where the wedding will be as this proposal will be hard to top, but our final round at Highlands Motorsport Park could be a great venue….
Congratulations Cody and Aly!
