GOWANS WINS RACE 2 AFTER CLEWS STRIPPED FOR CLASH WITH LAWRENCE
9 August 2009
Adam Gowans scored a controversial win in race 2 of the Aussie Racing Cars at Eastern Creek today after Kyle Clews was stripped of the win after clashing with David Lawrence during the race.
The Clash which Clews claimed to be "minor" almost sent Lawrence off the track at nearly 200km/h.
A 30 second penalty was handed to Clews which put him off grid 23 for the reverse grid race 3.
Clews started from pole position but botched the start leaving Maurice Masini to lead the opening turns before David Lawrence and Paul Kemal were able to slip by.
Lawrence was pushed wide on the straight the second time around as Kemal, Gowans and Clews slipped by with Phil Ward and Masini also getting by Lawrence.
As the race continued Gowans was able to get by Kemal on lap 3. Ward got up to third with Clews and Lawrence close behind.
Gowans started to pull a large gap as Masini turned Ward around and Clews broke free from those behind.
The last two laps had Clews chasing down Gowans and setting a fastest lap of the race on the way.
He was able to take the lead as they entered the end of the straight for the last time and held Gowans off to the chequered flag.
Lawrence came home third with CAMS Young Gun Garry Jacobson fourth.
A real battle in the last few laps between James Ward, Justin Ruggier, Maurice Masini, Tyler Owen,Brad Ward and Peter Carr was a highlight of the latter part of the race with all six being seperated by less than a second at the end.
Maurice Masini was once again the top Masters Cup competitor for the race. |
