CLEWS SLIPS BY FOR VICTORY IN AUSSIE RACING CARS OPENER AT EASTERN CREEK
8 August 2009
Kyle Clews turned pole position into a race win today at Eastern Creek Raceway where the Aussie Racing Cars are competing for Round 4 of the Aussie Racing Cars Super Series.
With a star studded line up that included Channel 7’s Neil Crompton, Top Gear’s Steve Pizzati, along with three times champion Paul Kemal, there was plenty at stake coming into this round.
Series contenders Clews, Adam Gowans and David Lawrence all qualified in the top four, only broken by Maurice Masini on third place, and top Masters Cup qualifier, which set race 1 up to be a ripper.
Gowans got off the line best while Clews bogged down and gave Lawrence second place as he slotted into third place for the opening lap.
Leading for exactly one lap Gowans succumbed to the slipstreaming power of Lawrence and Clews and had to settle into third place with Kemal not far behind.
Masini had the pace to win in the fight for Masters Cup honours and put pressure on Kemal for much of the race.
Neil Crompton pitted for mechanical repairs before rejoining the race out for contention while CAMS Young Gun Garry Jacobson secured a top ten finish.
The race was interrupted by the Safety Car to clear the track at the back of corporate hill which left Lawrence to lead a one lap dash to the line.
He fought off a spirited attack from Gowans into turn one with Clews also holding second place as Darrin Masini got the better of Kemal to sit fourth for the final lap.
The field snaked around the circuit and onto the front straight where Clews was able to pull alongside Lawrence and beat him to the line by a matter of centimetres.
“I didn’t want to be leading onto the straight the last time,” Clews said.
“With the restrictors we are running the slipstream is so powerful here.
“The car feels good and I think we can get a solid result this weekend if things continue this way.”
