Continuing as Australia’s biggest racing championship the Aussie Racing Cars will field 38 of our specialised single seater tin top racers. Aptly named the “Pocket Rockets” that’s just what they are, with a power to weight ratio not seen in any other class. It’s been 3 years since the class raced at Sydney Motorsport Park as part of the V8Supercar Series.
“We may not be the biggest cars on the track but we are by far Australia’s biggest category in numbers, I’m very excited to have 38 of our cars lined up for next weekend” said Brad Ward category manager. “This round sees 3 or 4 new drivers join us, plus the return of a few very fast drivers not seen this year” he said.
The Aussie Racing Cars are very much suited to the fast SMP circuit, the tracks width and high speed will guarantee side by side racing and plenty of drafting down the front straight to a quick pass at turn one or two. A number of teams tested last week at the circuit and it was mooted that we may well see the track lap record for Aussie cars tumble.
There’s currently a three way fight for top honours with Brendan Pingel leading on 195, 10 points ahead of Adam Uebergang with Craig Woods in third on 181. Allen Smith leads the Gold Cup standings with Ben Walsh top spot in both Masters Cup and Rookie of the year.
Since our last visit to SMP the track has undergone some improvements and alignment changes, providing some wider exits on a few of the back side turns, expect the boys (and girl 🙂 ) to be running 3 and 4 wide over there. If you have a paddock pass make sure you drop by the Aussie Racing Car pits, all our teams love spending time showing off the cars, chatting to the fans and signing photos and posters. Two drivers who will be very busy this weekend is category owner Tony Quinn and Mark Griffith, both are racing in Australian GT and ARC.
We asked some of the teams for their comments and thoughts on the Sydney round:
Mike Rinkin; Nissan; It’s great to have Robert and Rebecca in our team he is a friend and a fellow Nissan dealer Robert will line up at eastern creek next week and then Bathurst, he loves the division and hopes to join it full time. We are excited too as we will also debut a new Nissan at SMP with all new livery and colour package, but one thing for sure, there will be some pink somewhere!
Jeff Watters; The Advantage Motorsport #88 Hertz – Aerial Motors and #96 Automobility cars are looking to continue their progress forward at SMP. The Advantage Motorsport Engineers have made great set up gains with both cars that has seen podium finishes for Chris Stevenson for races in the last few rounds. Both Chris and Jeff have had many laps around SMP in their Commodore Cup vehicles and look forward to another strong showing in this next ARC round.
Craig Thompson; “Western Sydney Motorsport will again be supporting Rookie driver Blake Sciberras at the SMSP ARC round to run alongside our teams three cars. Its our local track all our local friends and family will be there so we are hoping we can all put in a great showing.”
Brendan Pingel; “I am really looking forward to returning to Sydney Motorsport Park with our own team, as we haven’t raced there since we leased a car back in 2012. Love the flowing nature of the circuit, and I’m are really looking to capitalise on our championship lead but certainly never taking anything for granted, because there’s some very competitive drivers entered for this event. I’m certainly ready for the challenge, the car is great and the team is ready and looking forward to an awesome event”.
Myles Bond; Bond Racing are super pumped to be heading to SMP for round 4 of ARC and have ExoDrill back on board as our major sponsor. Like all tracks on the calendar this year, I’ve never raced there and can’t wait to see the circuit. As a team we made leaps and bounds in Darwin and hope to continue that momentum in Sydney, we’re still improving the car and every lap in the seat is helping me to push it harder. No doubt the racing will be tight and tough like always, so I’m looking forward to getting the elbows up and getting amongst it!
“We have a full on weekend in Sydney, we are first up on Friday at 7.55am and we close the weekend with our fourth race on Sunday afternoon” commented Ward.
Keep an eye on our Facebook page as our media team will be uploading images and race reports after each on track session.
