ITS ALMOST 12 months since the Aussie Racing Cars visited Sydney Motorsport Park (SMP) the class was there in September last year where they featured on the NSW CAMS Championship round, this year, like all of the 7 rounds the pocket rockets feature on the under-card with the Supercars.

A field of 31 cars are entered for the four race weekend, this Friday the drivers will get two runs on the Eastern Creek based circuit.  Amazingly the practice session kicks off at 7.05am so the guys and gals will be expecting a cool start to the day, qualifying is at a more respectable time of 11.20-11.40am, the 20 minute session is where it all has to come together, there are at least 10-12 cars that will be vying for the all important pole spot.

The 3.93km track, known as the Wayne Gardner Circuit is very much suited to the Aussie Racing Cars, it combines both fast flowing corners like turn one with much tighter corners with double apex’s like turn 2 and the hairpin, both styles offer multiple race lines for the Aussie Cars, although it takes a brave driver to go side by side through the first turn!  This corner has seen many a race-car exit stage right, luckily the walls are a great deal away, mind you at almost 200km/hr through this turn they do come up quickly.  A great place to watch for late breaking and overshoots is on the outside of turn two, we’d recommend our fans take a look at the racing from over there.

Craig Thompson the team owner and driver from Western Sydney Motorsport will rack up his 100th race in an Aussie Car in the last race on Sunday, and speaking of Sunday the class has 3 races scheduled, including the final race for the weekend, so ARC open and close the weekend.

The last round in Townsville saw the unique situation of a father vs daughter team with Dale and Maddy Dunston both racing on their home circuit, taking this to the next level this weekend we have a Husband and Wife duo lined up, Emma Clark is in her second year of racing the Aussie Cars and this weekend her husband Adam jumps into one of Sean Rose’s cars, Emma mentioned that at their test day last week “Adam was getting quicker with each session, its going to be an interesting weekend”.  She said this with a smile on her face, we say watch this space to see how that unfolds 🙂 her emoji’s included knives in her message to us – LOL!!

A couple of the teams are rolling out new sponsors and car livery schemes, there will be even more colour on track, this includes the category owner Tony Quinn who will jump back into the number 100 Mustang (its #100 because it was the 100th car to roll off the ARC production line, also the first Mustang built)  Quinn’s car features Laser Electrical sponsorship for this round, and Maddy Dunston is rolling out her McDonalds sponsored Toyota Aurion.

Coming into this round Craig Woods (Western Sydney Motorsport) leads the series on 197 points from current champion James Duckworth (RDA Brakes/Rinkin Racing) on 194, chasing from third spot is Blake Sciberras also from Western Sydney Motorsport just two points shy of Duckworth (192pts).

Craig Thompson leads the Master Cup but only by one point from Leigh Bowler (who steps in a Sean Rose Motorsport car this weekend), Brendan Tucker has what is most likely an unassailable lead in the Gold Cup with 40 points, Jeff Watters is second on 22 points.  Jaie Robson strangle holds the Rookie Cup (36 points) and there is only four points separating the top two in the ladies trophy with Charlotte Poynting leading on 30pts from Emma Clark (26pts).  And lastly in the teams championship Western Sydney Motorsport Team One (Woods and Sciberras) have control from Sean Rose Motorsport with 40 points vs 24.

The drivers and crew along with Aussie Racing Cars are looking forward to this round and welcome the fans to come and have a look around the pits over the weekend, keep an eye on our Facebook Page for race reports and photos, along with our Facebook LIVE sessions each day.
