Round One Highlands Motorsport Park – Weekend Wrap

The Aussie Racing Cars made history when they hit the track at New Zealand’s newest and most exciting circuit, Highlands Motorsport Park.  The half-size pocket rocket series is the first Australian based racing series to have its opening round outside of Australia. The five 40 foot containers made their way across the ditch with more than 60% of our normal track entries, we fielded 25 cars, we also bought along a huge amount of spares, like tyres, engines, body shells, diff’s and more engines, plus all the tools each team would need at a race meeting.  This was a huge undertaking and thanks to all the teams for having their cars ready to rock and roll over the Tasman to Christchurch.  First by boat from…

Western Sydney Motorsport sweeps to their maiden Round Win in the ARC

Round 1 of the 2015 ARC championship at Highlands motorsport park NZ represented a dream debut for the WSM team in the Aussie racing cars championship for 2015. Team WSM  came into the 2015 championship year with somewhat of an open mind to how they would go in terms of being competitive in their first year. In the off season we managed to strike a deal with fellow Western Sydney driver Craig Woods to bring his car into our team and become our lead driver in our 3 car setup. Craig is actually driving ARC chassis #103 in 2015 whilst our Rookie driver Grant Thompson drives Craig’s old chassis from last year. We were very impressed with Craig’s testing results in the off season. His…

Brendon Pingel’s Highlands Debut

Brendon Pingel's record breaking debut at New Zealand's Highlands Motorsport Park. He was the fastest in free practice, set pole position, set the new lap record (only driver to break into the 1min 51 sec bracket) and made an outstanding comeback from a major race 1 accident to win the final race of the day in a nail biting finish with Craig Woods and fellow Queenslander Simon Smith.  "Wow what an event of highs and lows but its surely one I will never forget!!! After being the quickest in free practice then grabbing my very 1st pole position, I was so exited about the real possibilities of a win at this world class circuit said Brendon. A disappointment thru no fault of my own in race 1,…

Highlands – Race five report

We came, we saw, we conquered, well kind of, some of the teams did, some may wished they left the cars in the Containers, race five had it all once again, a few broken cars and a few bruised ego's, but all in all the ARC drivers once again turned on the show for the local crowd. The top spot was hard fought by Brendon Pingel, Craig Woods and Simon Smith the lead changing almost every lap. John Reynolds bought out the safety car in the final laps after hitting the wall on pit straight, leaving a two lap dash to the final flag. Pingel once again came out on top from Woods and Smith. Craig Woods won the round with 245 points from Simon…

Highlands – Race four report

A full reverse grid is always going to be, well exciting and thats what we got this time, race control tried to control the mayhem by breaking the field into 3 groups with a staggered start, 5 second intervals, they all caught up pretty quickly. Darren Chamberlin made contact with the bridge early in the race, his car was badly damaged, with Chamberlin going to Hospital for observation after passing out, he returned to the circuit after, "its weird, one minute I was flying towards the bridge, BANG, and then I was like hmm where am I, I'm ok now" he commented On the restart Andrew Waite (NZ) collided with Phil Ward which launched Waite sideways and causing the car to roll, again the car…

Highlands – Race three report

Everybody kept it together in the second points race for the year, unlike race one where it was carnage (see our report below). Darren Chamberlin was off pole and managed to get ahead of Craig Woods into the first bus stop with the top 5 swapping and changing into the Souther Loop, James Duckworth passed both to take the lead around lap 4 and take a 5-6 car lead, over the then second place Simon Smith, Smith began the chase down on Duckworth and got by after Duckworth slowed through the forest hairpin. Smith went on to take the win from Duckworth and Chamberlin. After yesterdays mishaps Brendon Pingel, Peter Carr and Tony Quinn all started off the rear of the grid, all three managed…

Highlands – Race two report

Race two was the first points race for 2015 and where we left off last year with tough hard racing, some would have been tricked into thinking that the boys and one girl would start off a bit more sedate, well no is the short answer. In the sport, we say we are not racing for sheep stations, and seen as we are in New Zealand and we are surrounded by Sheep Stations thats what happened. In what has to be one of the most tough fought races, we had races within the race, a cliche we know but thats what happened, as the red light went out all hell broke loose and the ride for the first corner, the bus stop we had pocket…

Highlands – Race one report

The first race for the weekend was actually qualifying for the next race, so there are no points awarded, the pocket rockets looked the part at Highlands Motorsport Park, nestled under the Southern Ranges (Mountains!) the cars are well suited to the 4.5km circuit. Brendan Pingel was off pole but didn't manage to get the power down off the line and was swamped by Andrew Waite (NZ), Peter Carr, Craig Woods and Darren Chamberlin, although Pingel fought back to third with a late under brakes pass on Woods at the final hairpin. Woods commented "I was getting a bit nervous as the rain was coming down again, plus it was only qualifying". Track knowledge proved key to Highlands professional driver Andrew Waite, although second place…
